Also called the Heart's Desire

Your Soul Urge, a.k.a. the Heart's Desire, is based on the vowels in your full name at birth and is one of the three core name numbers in your reading. It is part of the larger picture of who you are.
Note that vowels are pronounced from free-flowing breath: Aaaaaa; Eeeeeee; Iiiiiiiiii, Oooooo; and Uuuuuu. Consonants, on the other hand, have a distinct beginning or end. They are sharply begun or sharply finished. For example: B, D, K, P, S, T, and X.
There is a distinction in consonants, a harder edge than the soft and flowing vowels. The vowels reveal the tender you; your love, caring, and vulnerability. Consonants reveal certain of your characteristics that, among other things, shield your more vulnerable parts.
Your Soul Urge number shows your underlying motivation, or the general intention behind many of your actions. It dramatically influences the choices you make in life. The influence of your Soul Urge is everywhere - in your career, your environment, friendships, and life style.
Your Soul Urge number is considered one of the three core name numbers in your chart.

The vowels are A, E, I, O, and U. All other letters are consonants, except, in some cases, the letter Y.
The letter Y is inherently vacillating in its nature and usage (as the shape of the letter symbolizes), and consequently is sometimes a vowel, sometimes a consonant, depending upon how it is used in the name.
You can learn more about the Y as a vowel or a consonant here. (If you have a Y in your name, you can enter your name on that page and it will tell you if it's a vowel or a consonant.)

The Minor Heart's Desire or Minor Soul Urge number is based on your current or short name (the way you introduce yourself in a social setting, including the last name.
You can enter your current or short name in the widget at the top of this page instead of your full name to find what it is, then you can read the meaning of your Minor Heart's Desire here.

You have a Soul Urge number based on your full name at birth, and you also have a Minor Soul Urge or Minor Heart's Desire, based on your current name (the way you introduce yourself in a social setting, including the last name). Their calculations methods are the same.
For the numerology value of each letter, see the listing below.
To find your Soul Urge number, write out your full name, and place the appropriate numerology value above each vowel. Reduce the sum totals of the vowels of each name to single digits (unless you encountered a Master number 11, 22, or 33 - in which case you don't reduce them).
Add those totals and reduce them again to a single-digit number, this will be your Soul Urge.
If at any time you encounter a Master number, 11, 22 or 33, do not reduce it to a single-digit number.

Let's use Thomas John Hancock's chart as an example:
If you would rather bypass the math, or verify that you did it correctly, you can use our Chart Calculator.
(Always place the numbers for the Soul Urge above the name. The space below the name is used for the Personality number.)
The name Thomas has 2 vowels, O and A, with the values 6 and 1 resp., which totals to 7.
The name John has 1 vowel, an O, which is 6.
The name Hancock has two vowels, A and O (1 and 6), which adds to 7.
Thomas's Heart's Desire is therefore 7 + 6 + 7 = 20, which reduces to 2.

Numerology views your personality from different angles. Your Soul Urge (or Heart's Desire) is the inner you; it shows your underlying urge, your true motivation, and it dramatically influences the choices you make in life.
The Soul Urge is seen as part of the larger picture, which includes the Life Path, Expression, Birthday number, and Personality. But each points to a different side of you.

Some numerologists will calculate your Soul Urge number by adding the numerical values of all the vowels in your name, instead of each name separately. This is incorrect and will give you the wrong double-digit results (even though the single digit end-result does not change).
This may result in false Master numbers or hide true Master numbers, or Karmic Debt numbers, Power numbers, or other double-digit numbers that have specific meanings.
THE BEAUTY OF PATTERNS
Numerology is about patterns that are linked in intricate ways. The letters in your name are used to calculate your Transits (cycles used for forecasting). Your first name is the basis for your Physical Transit, your middle name for your Mental Transit, and your last name for your Spiritual Transit. Transit cycles are linked to your name numbers (Expression, Heart’s Desire, and Personality).
Your name numbers should therefore be calculated with that in mind. Adding all the numbers in your name in one continuous string, instead of each part of your name individually, ignores the patterns that are the basis of numerology.
